Born on 29 April 1960 in Takoradi, Ghana, to Felix Arikibe Chukwu and Victoria Ihematunam Chukwu, Amb. F. Nnamdi Chukwu was the first of four children. He grew into a man of strong convictions: straightforward, determined, and willing to stand up for what he believed. He hated injustice and stood for the truth, even when doing so was difficult.
His professional journey began in accounting and grew into more than three decades of regional service. After studying at SNAPS College of Accountancy in Ghana, he worked at Guthrie Nigeria Limited and the African Reinsurance Corporation before joining ECOWAS in 1989. He later furthered his education at the University of Central England in Birmingham, earning postgraduate qualifications, including a master’s degree in Audit, Management and Consultancy.
At ECOWAS, he held roles in auditing, financial management, and administration. He led Operational Audit and Consultancy and served as Head of Mission Support for the African-led International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA). He also oversaw administration and finance in the office of the ECOWAS President’s Special Representative in Mali. He went on to become Head of Division, Disbursement, at the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja. Colleagues knew him as a sharp, capable mind, and his intelligence showed in everything he did. He retired in May 2022.
Nnamdi was a people person, and his home was rarely just a home: it was a gathering place, a place of worship, and at times a film set. Hosting came naturally to him. He was generous with what he had, and wherever he was, conversation flowed and music and laughter were never far away. He was the life of the party and took real pleasure in welcoming others.
His faith found practical expression. He loved God and supported the church, opening his compound for church services, so that his home became a place of worship as well as a place of welcome.
Film was another of his passions. During the early years of Nollywood, movies were shot in his home, and he went on to produce films himself. Alongside a demanding career, he always made room for creativity, entertainment, and the company of others.
He dreamt of a better Nigeria and involved himself in efforts to build and empower his community. He cared about people having the opportunity to improve their lives, and he wanted to contribute to that progress. His willingness to speak up and get involved reflected how deeply he cared about the world around him.
To others, he was strong, tenacious, and a fighter. To his children, he was all of that, and simply Daddy. They saw the weight he carried and the sacrifices he made for them, and they knew there were others he carried quietly and never spoke of. Even when life was heavy, he kept going, and he kept showing up.
Their memories of him are full of long conversations, phone calls that ran longer than planned, spirited arguments, and laughter that filled the room. Some of his lessons he taught on purpose; many more they learned just by watching how he lived. These are what they hold closest, more than any title or achievement: his voice, his stubborn love, and the way he made them feel that they mattered. They always knew he had their backs. There was no wall he would not break down to make sure they were all right, and knowing they had Daddy gave them a quiet confidence wherever they went. That is what makes losing him so hard. The world feels less certain without him in it.
Nnamdi was the father of Festus Chinyereugo, Hilda Nkeiruka, Stephanie, and Joshua Nonso. On 23 November 2011, he became a grandfather with the birth of Michael Chimazuru Chukwu.
He passed away in China on 3 October 2026, aged 66. He was preceded in death by his mother, Victoria Ihematunam Chukwu, on 6 June 2006. He is survived by his father, Felix Arikibe Chukwu; his siblings, Jelyn Onyeka Chukwu, Julius Prince Chukwu, and Nathaniel Obinna Chukwu; his children; and his grandson. He is also remembered by Matilda Chukwu, Judith Ibe, and Senator Binta Masi Garba, the mothers of his children.
He is remembered for his generosity, his love of people, his faith, and his determination to stand for what he believed. His family and friends remember a man who opened his home to others, enjoyed life in their company, and fought for the things that mattered to him.
